Jim Jarmusch Working On New Film

Thanks Mka for the tip!

Geez, ask a simple question, get a simple answer. Jim Jarmusch recently sat down with Pitchfork to talk about his work curating a day at the upcoming All Tomorrow’s Parties festival in upstate New York (his pretty great line up includes Girls, Fucked Up, Kurt Vile, Vivian Girls, Raekwon, GZA, DJ Kool Herc, Sunn O))) and Boris) and it didn’t take much prompting for him to drop some pretty big news about a couple of forthcoming projects he’s working on.

Most excitingly, Jarmusch has lined up a helluva cast for his next film. Three of our favorites, Tilda Swinton, Michael Fassbender and Mia Wasikowska are tentatively slated to star in the director’s next film. He reveals that while it isn’t “quite financed yet” he does “hope to shoot early next year.” No details on what it’s about but frankly, who cares. That lineup sounds extraordinary and we hope some investors out there start writing some checks to make this happen. For Swinton, it will be her third film with Jarmusch following 2009′s excellent and under-appreciated “The Limits Of Control” and 2005′s “Broken Flowers.” And if it all comes together it will be a re-team for Fassbender and Wasikowska following their work on Cary Fukunaga’s forthcoming “Jane Eyre.”

The Next Dragon Tattoo Girl?

The contenders to lead David Fincher’s new thriller are an intriguing collection of unknowns—and speculation is flying as to who will get the job. Gina Piccalo separates fact from fiction.

While every major role in director David Fincher’s hotly anticipated crime thriller The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo has been cast in the last two weeks, the title character remains a mystery.

(…)

For instance, Alice in Wonderland star Mia Wasikowska (wearing a Lisbeth-esque pixie haircut) still gets named as a leading contender. As the co-star of Disney’s billion-dollar spring blockbuster opposite Johnny Depp and this summer’s critical hit The Kids Are All Right, she would bring her own burgeoning celebrity to Dragon. But Wasikowska respectfully declined Fincher’s offer to screen test for it and has returned home to Australia. (The 20-year-old star will appear in two indie dramas next year: director Gus Van Sant’s Restless and as the title character in Jane Eyre.)

6 Impossible Things Before Breakfast

Alice in Wonderland (2010) has been a long-awaited adaptation of the children’s book by Lewis Carroll. Most people are familiar with this story, being a classic and a children’s favorite. However, the 2010 version is special, as it is edgier and somewhat darker. Directed by Tim Burton, it boasts of a star-studded cast such as Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway and Crispin Glover. Mia Wasikowska plays 19-year old Alice, who loved to dream when she was young and told her father Charles Kingsleigh (Marton Csokas) of a place called Wonderland when she was young.

Actresses up against each other for ‘Dragon Tattoo’ role

Six young and promising actresses are contending to land a role in one of the most prestigious Hollywood film parts of 2010, four of which are Australian.
Sophie Lowe from Beautiful Kate, Alice in Wonderland’s Mia Wasikowska, Uninvited’s Emily Browning and Sydney stage sensation Sarah Snook are all aiming to grab the role of awkwardly asocial but extremely intelligent Lisbeth Salander. The four actresses flew in to LA this week after being short-listed for the big-budget adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s award-winning crime novel Girl With A Dragon Tattoo.
The women will not only be competing with each other, but also with two other leading ladies, who are both Academy Award and Golden Globe nominees.

English actress Carey Mulligan, from An Education, and Juno’s Ellen Page are also being considered by the director for the role.
According to a film source, the four actresses have good chances for the part, as director David Flincher is said to have specifically requested a “reasonably obscure” talent.
Rumour has it that James Bond actor Daniel Craig will play as the male lead of journalist Mikael Blomkvist, a role that was originally given to Brad Pitt.

Distributor Sony Pictures said the film about reporter Mikael and computer hacker Lisbeth, who are researching a family history for a wealthy recluse, will hit the big screens on December 2011.

Aussie Alice ‘destined for greatness’

THE breakneck speed with which Mia Wasikowska has become one of Hollywood’s ‘It’ girls hasn’t come as a surprise to anybody who knows her.

Even though the Alice in Wonderland star left Canberra High School in year 10 to pursue her acting career, teachers had already marked her out as a quiet achiever.

‘‘She was always going to succeed in her chosen field, not through over-confidence, but because of her intelligence, focus, work ethic and ability to communicate,’’ says David Whyte, who taught her for three years.

Sydney-based director Peter Carstairs saw between 100 and 200 young actors before casting Wasikowska in the key female role in his coming-of-age film September, shot in 2006.

‘‘She was head and shoulders above anyone else,’’ Carstairs says. ‘‘We offered her the role on the spot.’’

Since then, the 20-year-old has shot seven features opposite such seasoned actors as Daniel Craig, Johnny Depp, Hilary Swank and Julianne Moore.

Directors Tim Burton and Gus Van Sant have become card-carrying fans.

This month, Wasikowska appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair alongside fellow Aussie Abbie Cornish, An Education’s Carey Mulligan and Twilight’s Kristen Stewart.

When she returned home to promote her role as Alice in Burton’s candy-coloured adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, she seemed genuinely modest about her inclusion in the influential US magazine’s ‘‘New Hollywood’’ list.

Sunday Magazine February 2010

The lovely Mia Wasikowska (pronounced Vash-i-kov-ska) is just everywhere and I thought we’d continue to celebrate her Hollywood success with another post seeing as they had the world premiere of Alice in Wonderland in London, where she walked the Green Carpet in a gorgeous Valentino Couture Gown.

Mia was interviewed for Australia’s Sunday Telegraph glossy magazine Sunday that came out Sunday 21st February. She was interviewed by Joanne Hawkins and photographed by Georges Antoni.

Mia, daughter of photographer Marzena Wasikowska and visual artist John Reid and the middle child of three (younger brother and older sister) is close to her family, inside she shares:

Between acting jobs she returns to the family home in Canberra: “I still have the same room I’ve had my whole life”

To land the role of Alice, she had to fly to London three times in as many weeks, she said: “I had no body clock and was starting to feel delirious”

Girl most likely, why she think she’s succeeded where so many others have failed: “It’s such a random thing, right time, right place, luck, yes and a lot of hard work as well, I don’t know, it’s a mysterious industry.”

Comparisons to her namesake Mia Farrow and cutting off her hair: “I was happy to cut it off, I’m sure people would have liked me to keep it in its Alice state, but I’ve had hair down to here for the past two years” she says, pointing to her waist. “It’s great not to have to do anything with it in the morning and I was also happy to donate it to Locks of Love who make wigs for kids (who’ve lost hair through illness).”

After the madness of Alice in Wonderland, Mia will start as the much loved literary character, Jane Eyre in Cary Fukunaga’s adaption of the Charlotte Bronte novel.

Thanks Mn and SassiSam for the tip!

Mia Wasikowska is a wondering star

WERE someone to write a how-to guide to becoming a star, they might base it on Mia Wasikowska’s story.

At 15, the disillusioned dancer from Canberra decided to hang up her ballet shoes and pursue acting. So, after googling some agents and hounding one into taking her on (because she’d heard you needed one to work in film and TV), she landed a role in the now-defunct hospital series All Saints.

So far, so predictable. But this young star was destined to shine brighter. After a few outings in local films such as Suburban Mayhem and Rogue, the schoolgirl was whisked off to LA.

One TV drama later (In Treatment with Gabriel Byrne), she found herself acting alongside a James Bond (Daniel Craig in Defiance) and a two-time Academy Award winner (Hilary Swank in Amelia).

However, that all seems small fry when you consider her next part – the title role in Tim Burton’s upcoming Alice in Wonderland, opposite the director’s long-time actor of choice, Johnny Depp.

The 20-year-old Aussie’s name may be on a lot more people’s lips now, yet she seems neither concerned nor even that excited about the prospect of worldwide fame.

“Fame is useful in certain ways, because it helps you get more roles,” she says. “But I don’t want to take on everything I can get. I want to be selective about what I do.”

Yes, Wasikowska (pronounced Vash-i-kov-ska) is a rare breed in these fame-obsessed times – a star in the making (US film bible Variety tipped her as one of the top 10 actors to watch in 2008), who’s not really interested in becoming famous.

She may stay in luxurious hotels, dress up for award ceremonies and fly first class (“Depending on who I’m working for,” she laughs), but it’s the work that truly floats her boat.

“Primarily, it’s about acting,” she says firmly. “I love starting projects and being on set and filming. The part I find strangest is the stuff that accompanies it. But it’s a small sacrifice to make in order to do something I love.”
