Video Interview about The Kids, Jane Eyre, Restless and Alice

One of the films that got rave reviews at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was director Lisa Cholodenko’s (High Art, Laurel Canyon) The Kids Are All Right. The film is about two teenage children Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) and Josh Hutcherson (Journey to the Center of the Earth, Red Dawn) that decide to track down their donor father (Mark Ruffalo) as they were both conceived artificially by their two mothers (Annette Bening and Julianne Moore). Once they locate him, their household will never be the same. Like I said yesterday when I posted my interview with director Lisa Cholodenko, I loved this movie and I think it’s going to be remembered at the end of the year during Award season.

Anyway, I recently got to speak with Mia Wasikowska and we talked about how she got involved in the project, what it was like to work with such a great cast, what the past year has been like for her, and I also got updates on Gus Van Sant’s Restless, Jane Eyre, and has she heard anything about a sequel to Alice in Wonderland. Hit the video to see what she had to say.

New “Jane Eyre” Still

Move along, Jane Austen. Hollywood is hot for the Brontës again.

Filmmakers’ long affair with the divine Miss Austen is finally waning, after two decades of movies made from her elegant novels with their well-mannered characters, placid plots and witty repartee.

But enough with the endless circling of the Pump Room at Bath — time to get hearts racing! Time to bring back those wildly Romantic Brontë characters — plain Jane Eyre and moody Mr. Rochester, doomed Cathy Earnshaw and vengeful Heathcliff — to rend their garments, wail disconsolately and stagger across windswept moors.

Now that’s Hollywood. Or Hollywood-on-the-Thames. British filmmakers are at work on new versions of “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Brontë and Wuthering Heightsby Emily Brontë, to be released next year.

First Look at Mia Wasikowska in ‘Jane Eyre’

Times Online has debuted the first image of Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) in “Jane Eyre”, Cary Fukunaga’s follow-up to Sin Nombre adapted from Charlotte Bronte’s story.

Wasikowska stars as the title character who flees Thornfield House, where she works as a governess for wealthy Edward Rochester (Michael Fassbender). The isolated and imposing residence – and Mr. Rochester’s coldness – have sorely tested the young woman’s resilience, forged years earlier when she was orphaned. As Jane reflects upon her past and recovers her natural curiosity, she will return to Mr. Rochester – and the terrible secret that he is hiding. Jamie Bell and Dame Judi Dench also star.

Mia Wasikowska Covers Teen Vogue February 2010

Showing off her new shorter hair, Mia Wasikowska (pronounced Vah-shee-kov-ska) models in the garden for the February 2010 issue of Teen Vogue magazine.

The 20-year-old Aussie Alice in Wonderland star opened up to the mag about being Alice, fame and the upcoming Jane Eyre.

On taking fame as it comes: “I like my anonymity—that when I meet people they don’t know me. I like getting jobs because I auditioned for them, because of my ability as opposed to my celebrity.”

On playing the title character in the biggest fantasy story: “One of the things that was scary about taking on that role is the huge fan base; everybody has their own idea of who she is. So [Tim Burton and I] discussed, very early on, just being happy with her being our Alice…making her my own. I really think it will be exciting, especially for girls my age because it explores that period of your life when you have these expectations upon you and you’re finding that, amongst that, you have to try and hold on to yourself.”

On taking on the romantic story of Jane Eyre: “I’m completely excited. As a teenager I was very anxious. I had a lot of energy and passion that I wanted to channel into creative things, and I always felt like I wasn’t achieving enough.”
