Mia Joins Juliette Binoche In Olivier Assayas’ “Sils Maria” |
Mia Wasikowska is everywhere. The elfin darling of the indie elite (who has been known to slum it for the odd blockbuster, like breakthrough “Alice in Wonderland”), she has sustained the critical momentum of the pajama-clad daughter in “The Kids Are All Right” to dominate the Sundance acting conversation with “Stoker.” This summer, according to Ion Cinema, she will be trekking into “Sound of Music” country to film an Alpine meditation with Euro-stalwart Juliette Binoche.
“Sils Maria” reteams the “Summer Hours” duo of Binoche and director Olivier Assayas, though she’s been absent from his recent films like “Carlos” and “Something In The Air.” Set in the eponymous Swiss town, a floral hangout for 19th and 20th century intellectuals (Nietzsche’s old pad is now a tourist attraction), the picture will explore middle-age and the perception of one’s own success. Binoche, now something of a veteran herself, plays a famous actress haunted by roles of the past, with Wasikowska as her assistant.
Assayas told us of the project last year, “I’ve written it for Juliette Binoche, it’s based on her. A Juliette Binoche movie about Juliette Binoche with Juliette Binoche. It will be in English and part of the cast will be American.” And right he was. The film’s got funding lined up, so this feels like a definite possibility for Cannes 2014. Ms. Wasikowska, in the meantime, has at least five films on the way, from Richard Ayoade’s sophomore film, “The Double,” to Jim Jarmusch’s “Only Lovers Left Alive,” we’ll be seeing her around a fair bit this summer. Binoche, meanwhile, will move on to the project once she wraps a rare blockbuster excursion, on Gareth Edwards’ “Godzilla.”

“Alice in Wonderland” Is Getting A Sequel |
Linda Woolverton who has worked on 2010s 3D fantasy box office hit Alice in Wonderland and has a long history with Disney is reportedly penning the sequel.
Mouse House stalwart Woolverton has written the story of movies such as Mulan, released in 1998, and 1994 The Lion King, not to mention Beauty and the Beast and Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey. She is also currently working on the upcoming movie Maleficent, scheduled to be released in 2013.
Tim Burton’s big screen live action take on Alice starred Mia Wasikowska in the title role and Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter.
This will marks Woolverton’s third Alice screenplay as she also wrote the script for the musical stage version currently in the works by Disney Theatrical Productions, which Rob Ashford will helm as a direct adaptation of the 2010 feature.
In addition to Tron 3 that has effectively begun negotiations with Jesse Wigutow to come on board as the new scribe, this is the second high-profile sequel revealed to be in development in the last few days and the latest fantasy tale Disney is currently lensing or developing (Cinderella, Peter and the Starcatchers and Magic Kingdom).
At this point it’s unclear whether or not Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are interested in returning.

Johanna Mason: “Hunger Games: Catching Fire” Eyes Mia Wasikowska & Zoe Aggeliki For Key Role |
|
What do you think? Would Mia be a good fit?
Johanna Mason may look a little like Jane Eyre. According to the Indiewire blog The Playlist, “Jane Eyre” actress Mia Wasikowska and Zoe Aggeliki are on the short list of contenders to play Johanna in “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” the highly anticipated follow-up to “The Hunger Games.”
In the Suzanne Collins-penned novels, Johanna is the last surviving female Hunger Games victor from District 7. (Which Games she conquered isn’t known.) She meets Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) before the 75th Hunger Games and forms an uneasy bond with the bow-and-arrow wielding heroine. Johanna is also friendly with Finnick Odair, a role producers are also still trying to cast. Taylor Kitsch, Armie Hammer, Robert Pattinson and Garrett Hedlund were all rumored at one point or another to play Finnick.
While Wasikowska is slightly older than Lawrence, she doesn’t necessarily seem right for the part on first glance. Johanna has a strong-willed sexuality in the books, something that the “Alice in Wonderland” star has yet to exhibit onscreen. (Someone like “Shameless” star Emmy Rossum might be a better fit for Johanna.)
Aggeliki is a newcomer to the scene, but has a supporting role in “R.I.P.D.,” a supernatural action comedy with Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges. That film is due in theaters next summer.

Mia Wasikowska Set to Star in “Madame Bovary” |
Mia Wasikowska is reportedly confirmed to star as Emma Bovary herself in the new Occupant Entertainment-production, scripted by Rose Barreneche.
Sophie Barthes-directed adaptation of “Madame Bovary” stays ‘faithful to Gustave Flaubert’s story, but is a fresh retelling of the classic, focusing on more contemporary and youthful themes.’
Paul Giamatti is ‘also circling a key role,’ which could likely be the sly and conniving Monsieur Lheureux and would re-team him with Barthes (Cold Souls).
The novel has been adapted for the screen numerous times, despite “Madame Bovary” belonged to that classic box of literature labeled ‘unfilmable.’
The power of novel lied in the characters’ relationship to what happens to them, till Claude Chabrol, one of the most prolific members of the French New Wave cinema movement, brought 1991 Isabelle Huppert-starring feature. He brought back the importance to Flaubert of setting taking this up very powerfully in the film.

Mia Wasikowska and Jesse Eisenberg Board “The Double” |
Jesse Eisenberg and Mia Wasikowska have boarded Richard Ayoade’s sophmore movie project, The Double.
The novella details the story of an insignificant man driven to near breakdown by the appearance of his doppelganger. The film is said to reflect on loneliness and our need to love and be loved. Jesse Eisenberg will play the lead Yakov Petrovich Golyadkin as well as his doppelganger with Mia Wasikowska role currently undetermined. The film is inspired by Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s novella with the same name.
The script is being written by the director and original writer Avi Korine with Amina Dasmal and Robin Fox producing.
The project is set to shoot in the U.K. in spring/summer this year.

‘Wettest County’ Pushed Back to End of August |
We started today’s news with “this is a shame,” and I’ll reiterate that just a few hours later: this is a shame. As much as it saddens me, BoxOfficeMojo informs us that John Hillcoat‘s Wettest County in the World has been moved from its original date of April 20th to August 31st. Not the end of the world, but for a film that was supposed to hit at the end of 2011 and then got pushed to the spring, this latest development is bound to induce some groans.
Yet, though I’d prefer to see the movie in three and a half months and not almost eight, this decision makes total sense on the Weinstein Company’s part. April 20th is a pretty crowded day for wide releases — House at the End of the Street, Lockout, The Lucky One, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, and something called Chimpanzee all hit. August 30th, on the other hand, only brings 7500 and The Possession, or the typical horror fare that hits around Labor Day. (Weinstein was also supposed to open Scary Movie 5 on April 20th, but that hasn’t shot a single frame. Let’s be serious here.)
The cops and criminals, Prohibition-flavored events that star Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, Jason Clarke, Guy Pearce, Gary Oldman, Jessica Chastain, and Mia Wasikowska has the potential to blow those other two openers out of the box office water, depending on how they sell it. (Coming less than a month and a half after The Dark Knight Rises, which stars both Oldman and Hardy, could be used to County‘s advantage.) Good on it for that; I still want to see the thing right away.

Mia Wasikowska Offered Female Lead in ‘Oldboy’ |
|
As Clive Owen ponders the villain role in Spike Lee‘s “Oldboy”, Mia Wasikowska has been offered the female lead of Marie. If Wasikowska accepts, she’ll be starring opposite Josh Brolin, the only star confirmed so far for the English-language remake of the twisted 2003 thriller from Korean filmmaker Chan-wook Park.

Mia Wasikowska in Jarmusch Vampire Movie |
An untitled vampire film is in the works and Jim Jarmusch is sitting in the director’s seat.
Jarmusch is the man behind Stranger Than Paradise, Down By Law, Dead Man with Johnny Depp, and Broken Flowers. For his latest, he has attracted actors Tilda Swinton, Michael Fassbender, John Hurt and Mia Wasikowska. This is how the film is described by Jarmusch and ScreenDaily; it’s a “crypto-vampire love story, set against the romantic desolation of Detroit and Tangiers.”
Shooting is scheduled to start in early 2012.

The Next Dragon Tattoo Girl? |
|
The contenders to lead David Fincher’s new thriller are an intriguing collection of unknowns—and speculation is flying as to who will get the job. Gina Piccalo separates fact from fiction.
While every major role in director David Fincher’s hotly anticipated crime thriller The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo has been cast in the last two weeks, the title character remains a mystery.
(…)
For instance, Alice in Wonderland star Mia Wasikowska (wearing a Lisbeth-esque pixie haircut) still gets named as a leading contender. As the co-star of Disney’s billion-dollar spring blockbuster opposite Johnny Depp and this summer’s critical hit The Kids Are All Right, she would bring her own burgeoning celebrity to Dragon. But Wasikowska respectfully declined Fincher’s offer to screen test for it and has returned home to Australia. (The 20-year-old star will appear in two indie dramas next year: director Gus Van Sant’s Restless and as the title character in Jane Eyre.)
