‘Wettest County’ Pushed Back to End of August

We started today’s news with “this is a shame,” and I’ll reiterate that just a few hours later: this is a shame. As much as it saddens me, BoxOfficeMojo informs us that John Hillcoat‘s Wettest County in the World has been moved from its original date of April 20th to August 31st. Not the end of the world, but for a film that was supposed to hit at the end of 2011 and then got pushed to the spring, this latest development is bound to induce some groans.

Yet, though I’d prefer to see the movie in three and a half months and not almost eight, this decision makes total sense on the Weinstein Company’s part. April 20th is a pretty crowded day for wide releases — House at the End of the Street, Lockout, The Lucky One, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, and something called Chimpanzee all hit. August 30th, on the other hand, only brings 7500 and The Possession, or the typical horror fare that hits around Labor Day. (Weinstein was also supposed to open Scary Movie 5 on April 20th, but that hasn’t shot a single frame. Let’s be serious here.)

The cops and criminals, Prohibition-flavored events that star Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, Jason Clarke, Guy Pearce, Gary Oldman, Jessica Chastain, and Mia Wasikowska has the potential to blow those other two openers out of the box office water, depending on how they sell it. (Coming less than a month and a half after The Dark Knight Rises, which stars both Oldman and Hardy, could be used to County‘s advantage.) Good on it for that; I still want to see the thing right away.

“The Wettest County” Set For April 2012 Release

There was a point earlier this year when it looked like we might see John Hillcoat‘s The Wettest County by the end of the year. The Weinstein Company picked up the film, originally called The Wettest County in the World, at Cannes, and it seemed reasonable to assume that a bootlegging tale from the director of The Proposition and The Road starring Tom Hardy and Shia LaBeouf might be a solid year-end release.

But the Weinsteins, focused as ever on awards season, have already pegged The Artist, The Iron Lady and My Week With Marilyn as the company’s year-end contenders. So The Wettest County is now set to arrive in April 2012.

The specific date is April 20, 2012, which means the film will face thin competition from Scary Movie 5, the Guy Pearce and Maggie Grace ‘Taken in space’ movie Lockout, and The House at the End of the Street, starring Jennifer Lawrence.

Mia Wasikowska Joins “The Wettest County in the World”

Let’s get straight to the point! Gary Oldman, Guy Pierce and Mia Wasikowska have all joined the project we previously wrote about – “The Wettest County in the World”.

Directed by John Hillcoat, movie already stars Shia Labeuof, Tom Hardy, Dane DeHaan and Jessica Chastain. Now, with this latest casting news, it definitely sounds perfect!

Prohibition-era dramatic thriller, written by Nick Cave follows “…the Bondurants, bootlegging brothers runnin’ stills, runnin’ loads, and runnin’ from the law in Depression-era Virginia. The book is mainly narrated through the experience of the youngest Bondurant, Jack (in truth, a grandfather of the author), and his family’s moonshine enterprise supplies the action in a plot that evokes the culture of distilling and distributing white lightning.

To optimistic Jack, bootlegging is both a bond to his older brothers, Forrest and Howard, and a means to make cash to impress a girl. Forrest, by contrast, is taciturn and suspicious: the world is violent, and he meets it on that ground. Tender of the stills and imbiber from same, burly Howard is always ready to take on the Bondurants’ enemies, corrupt law officers. Wending through this conflict in flash-forward mode is novelist Sherwood Anderson, who plumbs the Bondurant story a few years after the brothers’ climactic confrontation with the county sheriff. Descriptively gritty and emotionally resonant, novelist Bondurant dramatically projects the poverty and danger at the heart of the old-time bootlegging life. “
